Honky Chateau and Tumbleweed Connection 2017 Reissues

These are the first two of the reissues which are available separately or as part of a 10-LP box set. I ordered the box set from the official site, and just got these two in the mail yesterday. I haven’t had a chance to listen to these enough to adequately talk about the remastering quality yet, but I will update that at a later time. For now, just a few notes about the physical releases themselves.

Honky Chateau

The first thing I noticed about Honky Chateau is that the coloring is a bit different. This happens sometimes with reissues, and probably isn’t a huge deal most of the time. The part of the cover with his face on it is a noticeably different tint, though.

It confused me for minute the first time I opened my copy of the original release, but there is a flap approx. 1/3 of the width of the album cover and a little tab that goes into a slot. When you open the flap, it reveals photos and names of Bernie Taupin and Jean-Luc Ponty. When you close the flap, it shows the album names and song titles.

However, in the 2017 reissue, there is no flap. The song titles are printed there and Bernie and Jean-Luc’s photos have been removed. I suppose this is just because it was kind of a weird and irregular design, but still, actual content on the cover has been removed to do this. (I didn’t take a photo of the other side of the flap, because it’s a continuation of the inside photo without much of anything on it.)

Edited to add another pic for clarity. The 2017 version is gatefold, the above pic is just showing how it lacks the extra little tab thing. This is the new version opened up:

Tumbleweed Connection

Once again, there is a noticeable color difference, this time for the booklet. The newer version is printed on much darker paper. Also, instead of both the booklet and the record fitting in one pocket like on the original release, the reissue has pockets on both sides: one for the booklet, one for the record.

Nothing else noteworthy about the cover of this, though the tint does seem slightly different.

Caribou and Don’t Shoot Me and apparently out now too, but mine haven’t come in the mail yet. Unlike the ones that were in the Burberry box set and later released separately, these ones were not exact replicas of the originals, so minor differences aren’t too surprising, I suppose.
